Day 6 Santa Fe, NM

On our second morning in Santa Fe we were determined to get an early start. It was another glorious day and we ate outside on the patio. This time we met travelers from Texas and a group of 10 retirees from Sacramento who were part of a baby sitting club that started 40 years earlier.

Our first stop of the day was at the New Mexico History Museum and the Palace of Governors. Santa Fe is the oldest capital in the US. It was founded in 1607 and in 1610 became the capital of the Spanish province Nuevo Mexico. In 1912 became the capital of the US State New Mexico.

There is a special exhibit “Voices of the Counterculture in the Southwest” which explores the cultural revolution in New Mexico during the same period as the “Summer of Love”. There were presentations about music, marijuana, communes, hippies, etc… One of the most interesting exhibits were several huge pages with the teachings of Yogi Bhajan illustrated by his followers which eventually became pages in the book “Be Here Now”.

After lunch at the French Pastry Shop and Creperie, we toured the Basilica Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi and the State Capital (“the roundhouse”) where we walked through the House and Senate Chambers.

We took a quick 10 minute drive out of town to visit the Shidoni Foundry, Gallery and Sculpture Gardens. We were surprised and impressed by the massive bronze sculptures in the garden and the craftsmanship of the pieces in the Gallery. We came to see creations by Nancy Golden (Kerry’s mother) and we found two beautiful bronze sculptures: “Morning’s Glory” and “Rapunzel”:

I first met Kerry 8 years ago in Zumba classes at AVAC and we have been friends ever since.

We finished the day with an extraordinary dinner at The Compound: Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, Alaskan Halibut, and Beef Tenderloin with O’Brian Potatoes & Foie Gras Hollandaise…wow…
