Day 15: Carlisle, PA to Philadelphia PA to NYC

At 8:00 AM we jumped out of bed, packed, and ate breakfast and by 9:00 AM we were on the road. At 1:00 PM we had arrived in Philadelphia at Kay’s house (aka: Home of The Resistance).

Kay is the sister and East Coast version of my brother-in-law Jody.  Kay made us a cantaloupe soup and tuna pasta salad that reminded us some of the great meals prepared for us by Jody back in California. Kay and Brian live in a lovely house filled with an incredible collection of art and we were lucky to see a few large prints of Brian’s photographs (http://bjk1420.wixsite.com/photographs).

We sat on the back porch just relaxing and soaking in the serene back yard. It was calm and alive! We saw one of the first hummingbirds of the season and a brilliant red cardinal. A bird feeder suspended from a cable attracted birds who would perch, peck at some seed and then chase or be chased away.  Squirrels were snacking on the seeds and husks on the ground discarded by the birds.A bunch of leafy green trees and a low fence with a gate leads out to a creek that runs behind the house. Gina and I could have sat there for days talking and listening, laughing and smiling. This was our first taste of our East Coast family.

After a few hours with Kay and a few more hours driving we arrived in Brooklyn. We rented an apartment for a week at 343 Gold Street on the 21st floor. The apartment has a tall narrow window looking North (where we can see the Chrysler Building! and three floor-to-ceiling windows with an unobstructed view to the East. We felt like we were in heaven.

We got our first taste of NYC food just a few blocks down the street at Junior’s. The Zagat review starts out: “World famous” for its “stupendous” cheesecakes, this Brooklyn “icon” and its Midtown offshoot also sling a “huge menu” of “decent” American diner fare, served in “gigantic portions” by “swift” staffers. Gina had a pastrami on rye and I had a pastrami Ruben. Wow. We did not have room for cheesecake, and Gina brought half of her meal home.

After 2 weeks of traveling we were looking forward to a full week in Brooklyn and New York City!
