Day 17: NYC: The MET & Charles

We slept in again and could feel the pattern of late nights followed by late mornings becoming a habit. We got out of the apartment around 2 o’clock and picked up bagel sandwiches on the way to the The Metropolitan Museum of Art one of the world's largest and finest art museums. Once again we ran out of time and promised ourselves to come back. I never realized that this painting was larger than life.

We headed downtown through the park to the Google Office to meet Charles who was a member of Tom's Google family and a good friend outside of work as well. Charles knew about a hard to find staircase that led to the roof of the building where there was a spectacular view of the iconic NYC skyline.

Charles took us to Basta Pasta, where Japanese ingredients and techniques are combined with traditional Italian recipes. To create dishes such as Tagliatelle Nero con Gamberetto e Granchi (homemade black tagliatelle, shrimp, crab meat, shredded zucchini, spicy tomato sauce) and Ravioli de Vitello, Prosciutto e Mozzarella (homemade ravioli with veal, prosciutto, mozzarella with fresh tomatoes, parmesan sauce).

One Basta Pasta signature dish is Spaghetti Con Prosciutto E Parmigiano which is tossed table side in a giant wheel of parmesan cheese.

A few blocks away Tom realized he left the camera bag in the restaurant. Charles hopped on his bike and in a few seconds was out of sight. He recovered the camera even though the restaurant had closed. It was great to see Charles and hard to say goodnight...but we know he is just a text, phone or video call away...
